Saintes Maries de la Mer's guided tour

A guided tour through the village and its monuments

Croix de Camargue 1
Découverte du village

A morning jaunt

"On a summer morning, my family and I decided to join the Saintes Maries de la Mer's guided tour. We left the Tourist Office with our guide, heading west. She presented the arena and its activities, the harbourg and its traditional fishing side, when we reached the Camargue cross, symbol of the region, she presented the Park, the village and its legends.

Next we headed to the gardian's cabin, the traditional house and then to the Launes pond.

The highlight of the visit is Notre-Dame-de-la-Mer church, erected and fortified in the XII th century to  welcome and protect the inhabitants of the village from pirats' raids. It takes walking up the stairs to its roof to understand the place's strategical importance: The bell tower can be seen up to 10km of distance from land or sea.

The tour ends in the center of the village so we strolled along the pedestrian streets. We all keep an excellent memory  of this tour because we went to places we wouldn't have seen without our guide."
